Fran Keller Released From Prison

I have recently come across an excellent article on the Austin Chronicle online: Fran Keller Released From Prison, by Jordan Smith. Fran Keller, a victim of one of the day care satanic ritual abuse hysteria of the 1980's & 1990's, was imprisoned in the 1992. She was in prison for over 20-years.

The article also references the San Antonio Four, who have also been in the news recently. (You can view my Nov 27th post on the San Antonia Four by clicking here.)

Closer to home were the Wenatchee child abuse prosecutions. The Seattle Post Intelligencer had done an excellent series entitled The Power to Harm. Sadly, it appears that this series is no longer online on the Seattle PI's website.

polygraph examinations

While doing some recent (minor) reorganization WACPR's PDF section, I decided that it was time to address the issue of the polygraph. It was actually the article The Use of Truth-Telling Devices in Sexual Assault Investigations (which is not archived in any of my DropBox folders & thus the only one currently listed under "misc PDF's") that got me thinking.

Many years ago (in 2002, to be exact), a polygrapher explained to me that sometimes people (like alleged sexual assault victims) are NOT asked to take polygraph examinations. The reasoning, as I understood it, is that sometimes people could be too emotional (?traumatized?) for the polygraph to be of use.
Along those lines, consider the following three articles, which were published on Psychology Today's blog.

Having been through a very traumatic experience myself (my child was seriously injured & I was asked to take a polygraph examination), I can understand this.

But I wonder: wouldn't the opposite also be true? For example, the person who had so seriously harmed my child was never found. (At the time, it appeared to me that he/she was never really sought). Sadly, I believe that the statute of limitations is up. If the guilty party were to take a polygraph now, wouldn't it be easier for them to "pass" it, knowing that, no matter what, they would not be charged?

Hospital Holds West Hartford Girl For 9 Months After Parents Argue Diagnosis

According to Beau Berman, in his story Hospital Holds West Hartford Girl For 9 Months After Parents Argue Diagnosis, a "medical “mystery” ... has left a Connecticut family baffled and heartbroken. After a long history of medical problems, a West Hartford teenager is now “trapped” inside a hospital with seemingly no way out."

At 15, Justina Pelletier was diagnosed with mitochondrial disease, "a genetic disorder that can cause loss of muscle coordination and weakness."

Later, however, when she was ill with the flu, hospital staff "said Justina had “somatoform disorder.” In short, they were saying she suffered from a mental illness, not mitochondrial disease."

Even though the family has the support of "Dean Hokanson, the clinical psychologist who has worked with Justina the past five years", they are still fighting for custody of their daughter.

Mother claims foster father abused her children

Greg Argos & Adam Longo report (in Mother claims foster father abused her children) that a foster father, Pedro Manzo, is accused of abusing a foster child in his care.

It is possible that this is a true case of shaken baby syndrome. Pedro Manzo acknowledged that he "grabbed under her jaw, shook her in a side to side motion...." The result? "Her neck is fractured. She has blood clots...."
