a long overdue post - links for June 2014

It has been some time since I have published a post here on WACPR. (I do welcome you to visit - & follow - WACPR on Scoop It, where I am able to post more frequently.  These will, however, generally not include videos, as it has been my "thing" to reserve video posts for this blog.) I have decided to begin sharing links via a monthly post instead of posting each video story as I discover it.Father pays outstanding child support, still gets jail time

Hospital Holds West Hartford Girl For 9 Months After Parents Argue Diagnosis

According to Beau Berman, in his story Hospital Holds West Hartford Girl For 9 Months After Parents Argue Diagnosis, a "medical “mystery” ... has left a Connecticut family baffled and heartbroken. After a long history of medical problems, a West Hartford teenager is now “trapped” inside a hospital with seemingly no way out."

At 15, Justina Pelletier was diagnosed with mitochondrial disease, "a genetic disorder that can cause loss of muscle coordination and weakness."

Later, however, when she was ill with the flu, hospital staff "said Justina had “somatoform disorder.” In short, they were saying she suffered from a mental illness, not mitochondrial disease."

Even though the family has the support of "Dean Hokanson, the clinical psychologist who has worked with Justina the past five years", they are still fighting for custody of their daughter.

Snapshot Device Helps Clear Father in Baby’s Death

According to Mark Zinni in Snapshot Device Helps Clear Father in Baby’s Death, "Authorities accused [Michael] Beard of suffocating his daughter so she would start crying to get her mother’s attention." Fortunately for Mr Zinni, he had the Progressive Snapshot. "In this case, the information was able to prove that Beard wasn’t in the house long enough to kill his daughter."

I have discovered the  Inquiry into Pediatric Forensic Pathology in Ontario website, the link to which I have added in my links page. I have also added two PDF documents (Inquiry into Pediatric Forensic Pathology in Ontario - Report and Pediatric Forensic Pathology - Limits & Controversies) in my DropBox account (in the folder "Inquiry into Pediatric Forensic Pathology in Ontario"), which you can access via my PDF page.
